Samples collected by health authorities from a citizen in Nampula suspected of having monkeypox were sent to a laboratory in South Africa for tests and the results have come back negative.
The information was released yesterday at a press conference by head of the Department of Public Health at the Provincial Health Services of Nampula, Geraldino Avalinho.
The health authorities representative took the opportunity to reassure the population, noting that the authorities were on the alert for any further cases and had the medicines needed to deal with any outbreak that might arise.

Avalinho said that the individual in question actually had chickenpox, but had already recovered under monitoring by a multi-sectoral team.
The patient, a 24-year-old Mozambican, was admitted to the Military Hospital in Nampula last week with skin lesions similar to those seen in cases of monkeypox.
