Sugar production in Mozambique could increase from 1.6 million to 1.9 million tons in the current 2024-25 agricultural campaign. The figure would represent a 10% increase in output and an upward trend when compared to the previous season, when the indicators were set at around 200,000 tons.
The information was shared by the agriculture sector in Xinavane district of Maputo province, on the occasion of the launch of the agricultural campaign a few days ago.
A positive outlook was made, although it was noted that in the last two years the subsector had been impacted by natural disasters, especially the floods that affected the agricultural income of family and industrial production fields, leading to the temporary closure of the Maragra sugar mill.
Agriculture data indicate that the subsector is responsible for the production of around 2.7 million tonnes of sugar cane, and 220,000 tonnes of sugar, which meets all national needs and still exports around 15% of production.
Currently, sugar mills support 18,000 direct jobs throughout the country, but after the 2022 cyclone, production of sugar cane plummeted from 2.7 to 1.6 million tonnes.
Despite the shock, the subsector that same year “ensured supply and price stability in the national market”, agricultural authorities say.
Over the last ten years, sugar production in Mozambique has averaged around 350,000 tons/year, in a context in which the country absorbs only half of this quantity.
In addition to the sugar sector, growth of over 5% is also expected in cereal production, especially maize, with output expected to exceed three million tons.
