Sugar production in Mozambique could reach 210,000 tons in the 2024-15 campaign, a slight increase on the previous season, when indicators were set at around 200,000 tons.
However, this figure remains well below the real capacity of the national industry, largely due to the shutdown of the Açucareira da Maragra following floods in Maputo province in 2022 and the impact of other climatic events frequent in the country.
These perspectives were presented to ‘Notícias’ by the executive director of the Mozambican Sugar Producers Association (APAMO), Orlando da Conceição.
Production however continues to respond to national market demand.
In the last 10 years, sugar production in Mozambique averaged around 350,000 tons, of which the country absorbed only half.
Da Conceição has in fact previously explained that, on occasion, Mozambique does not consume even 50% of the sugar it produces, so the availability of this product on the market is not threatened.
Da Conceição argued that, although the now-closed Açucar da Maragra factory is of great importance, other producers, such as the sugar factories of Xinave in Maputo province and Mafambisse in Sofala continue to contribute to the market without being penalised.
At the moment, the industry’s biggest concerns are the illegal entry of sugar into the country, which can be seen in the progressive reductions in production in recent years.
