Some 500 houses, most of them poorly built, and public services suffered damage in the storm in Chimoio, central Mozambique on Saturday, which killed five people, the authorities told Lusa in their latest assessment.
A total of 10 families are in temporary shelters, set up by the government, and another 29 receive food assistance.
The storm has also destroyed three health posts, two schools and eight places of religious worship in the districts of Chimoio and Gondola, according to the Institute for Disaster Management (INGC).
“There are already lessons from previous events: these sudden phenomena will always occur in Manica,” the affected region, Alexandre Tique, provincial delegate for the Institute of Meteorology (INAM), told Lusa.
“We need to begin to adapt to these events with the maintenance of houses,” he added.

Five people died on Saturday, four due to the collapse of houses and walls, and one was struck by lightning.
Another five people were injured after their homes collapsed during the storm which combined strong winds, thunder and hailstorms.

The storm moved north and on Sunday injured 17 people in Gurue district, Zambezia province. In that area there were also collapse of houses and destruction of infrastructure.
