Heavy rain and wind destroyed 800 poorly built houses in northern Mozambique’s Memba district from Friday to Sunday, the local administrator said on Monday.
“We are trying to mobilise tents to provide temporary shelter for all the people”, said Juma Assane, while the damage caused by the storm is still being assessed.
Two schools were partially destroyed and there was also damage to two bridges and two health centres.

Located in Nampula province, the administrative post of Memba, which suffered the destruction caused by the storm, is a coastal area at the mouth of the Mecubúri river.
If weather conditions continue to be adverse, the waters could wash away what remains of the road connecting Memba to Nacala-Velha, the administrator warned.
At least 10 people have died and another 47,493 have been affected by rains, strong winds and other natural disasters in Mozambique in the current rainy season, according to the latest report by the National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD).
Extreme phenomena of the rainy season and cyclones in Mozambique are usual between December and March each year.
