The storm which hit the central Mozambican province of Manica a week ago destroyed 23 schools in three districts, according to Augusto Alexandre, the Manica provincial delegate of the country’s relief agency, the National Disaster Management Institute (INGC).
Speaking on Friday at a meeting of the Emergency Operational Committee in the provincial capital, Chimoio, Alexandre said 90 classrooms had been lost, directly affecting 1,400 pupils.
He said the death toll from the storm now stood at eight, and seven other people had been injured, some seriously.
The high winds and torrential rain had completely destroyed 204 houses, affecting 6,164 people. A further 1,006 houses had suffered partial collapses. Some of the roads in the province had become impassable, and pylons had been blown down on some power lines, interrupting electricity transmission.
Alexandre said the government is raising the fallen pylons so as to restore power supplies to the public, and is replacing the roofs on some of the schools and other damaged buildings. It is also removing 58 tonnes of pesticides which were in the warehouse of the Provincial Directorate of Agriculture, where much of the product is regarded as lost.
In Gondola and Vanduzi districts and in Chimoio city, he continued, the government is providing food and building materials to the households affected by the storm.
The meeting of the Emergency Operational Committee heard from each sector of activity what actions are being taken to minimize the impact of the storm.
