Flooding from Tropical Storm Ana has already claimed 10 lives in Mozambique as the depression moves inland, according to the latest information from local authorities and civil protection agencies, Lusa reported on Tuesday evening (25-01).
Six deaths were reported on Tuesday afternoon, with the increase in the flow of rivers in the districts of Macanga and Tsangano, Governor of Tete province Domingos Viola announced in a provisional assessment.
Two other people died after being swept away by the Licungo river in Mocuba, Zambézi province, on Monday, and two more deaths were reported by the National Institute for Disaster Management (INGD) from Manica province yesterday, one of whom died when a dwelling wall collapsed.
In Tete province, the increase in the flow of the Revubué river yesterday destroyed the Tete-Moatize bridge, several houses and other infrastructure.
Some vehicles forming part of the governor of Tete’s retinue were also swept away by the current during a site visit.
All occupants are reported to be safe. “We have three people in the trees and we are waiting for a boat [to rescue them],” said Domingos Viola, quoted by the information portal O País.
The swollen Revubué river is affecting thousands of residents along the river’s banks, he added.
Mozambique has the seasonal cyclonic season, and Tropical Storm Ana – which has since lost strength and turned into a depression – was the first to hit the country.
Despite the storm currently advancing towards Zimbabwe, heavy rain is expected in the coming days, capable of causing flash floods and landslides in northern central Mozambique.
The passage of the storm over Madagascar at the end of last week killed 39 people and left about 65,000 homeless, according to local authorities, while in Malawi at least four people have died.
