The National Disaster Relief Institute (INGC) says it has only 360 million of the approximately 700 million meticais it needs to provide food assistance to more than 1 million people affected by drought, reports O País today.
The number of people who need food assistance in the country due to drought is estimated at 1.5 million, leading the government to activate its red alert status, but the INGC is still under-funded by nearly 50 percent.
“Drought victims need something like 15,000 tons of food per month: 13,000 tons of cereals and 2,000 tons of beans. This costs 700 million meticais. The government has provided 360 million,” says INGC director Joao Machatine.
Speaking during a working visit to Mabote district of Inhambane, where prolonged lack of rain has left about 20,000 people without food, Machatine says he is now pinning his hopes on internal solidarity, urging everybody to donate what they can, however little.
