Mozambique: Statement by women’s rights network Fórum Mulher – unabridged

“We have learned through credible social networks of acts of incitement [carried out] by a public servant, Mrs Alice Tomas, of the Frelimo parliamentary group. The MP in question would have [allegedly] used her Facebook account to incite 10 men to rape activist and human rights defender Fatima Mimbire, allegedly because she ‘takes out words [which are] poisonous to the Mozambican people’, her post said.

“This act is reprehensible and repugnant, especially from a public servant who directly or indirectly lives on the contributions of the Mozambican people, including those of the activist in question.

“We take this opportunity to publicly and vehemently condemn the position of Mrs Alice Tomas, to reiterate that attitudes such as these undermine all efforts to reduce and eliminate male chauvinist and patriarchal practices and the struggle for the empowerment of women at all levels.

“We reaffirm our commitment as women to defend others by ensuring that such behaviour is publicly condemned and punished.

“We demand that those with the capacity and proper authority take action with a view to rendering this public servant accountable.”

Tomamos conhecimento através de redes sociais, credíveis, do actos de incitamento violência por parte de uma servidora pública, a Deputada Alice Tomas, da bancada parlamentar da Frelimo. A deputada em questão teria usado da sua conta no Facebook, para incitar 10 homens para que violem a activista e defensora dos Direitos Humanos, Fatima Mimbire, alegadamente por esta “tirar palavras venenosas para o povo moçambicano”, dizia seu post.

Este acto é de todo condenável e repugnante sobretudo vindo de uma servidora publica que directa ou indirectamente sobrevive das contribuições do povo moçambicano, incluindo da activista em questão.

Tomamos esta oportunidade para publicamente, condenar veemente a postura da Deputada Alice Tomas, Reiterar que atitudes como estas reduzem todos os esforços de redução e eliminação de práticas machistas, patriarcais e a luta pelo empoderamento das mulheres a todos níveis.

Reafirmamos o nosso compromisso como mulheres, de defender as outras garantindo que esse tipo de comportamento sejam publicamente punidos e condenádos

Exigimos a quem de direito que tome acção com vista a responsabilização desta servidora publica.
