The health ministry aims to vaccinate over a million children against measles this year, as part of a campaign to prevent outbreaks, an official source said Wednesday.
The campaign targets children under the age of 5 across Mozambique, said Rodito Nhantumbo, who is responsible for measles surveillance at the Ministry of Health, as quoted by daily newspaper Notícias.
In total, according to the source, since last year, the country has registered 680 cases, with emphasis on Nampula province, which recently recorded outbreaks of the disease in Mandimba district.
“The protocol indicates that in cases of outbreaks we should carry out the blocking vaccination and that is what we did,” the source added.
Ministry data made available in 2018 mentioned that in seven years, the country has recorded more 90,000 measles cases, indicating that the disease is among the main causes of vaccine-preventable mortality.
