The Mozambican government and Operation Water have signed a public-private partnership to develop water infrastructure across the country, in an investment of about US$23 million (€19 million).
“Our ultimate goal is to contribute to ending the global water crisis and promoting social progress for the poorest and most marginalised,” said Ryan Philips-Page, president of Operation Water, quoted in a statement from the entity.
The agreement calls for Operation Water to develop eight projects to benefit nearly 300,000 people from several communities, the document said, adding that it is the “first public-private partnership in Mozambique and the second of its kind across Africa for the supply of safe and clean water.
Construction of the infrastructure is scheduled to begin at the end of this year and be concluded in 2022.
“The partnership between Operation Water and the Government will ensure that water is delivered directly to people, eliminating the need for women to engage in physical water collection and giving children the opportunity to attend school,” the document adds.
Data advanced by the entity indicates that 49% of the population in Mozambique does not have access to improved water sources.
