The Mozambican government needs a total of 7 billion meticais (94 million euros) for the plan to manage those displaced by armed violence in Cabo Delgado, the Institute for Disaster Management (INGD) announced on Monday.
The amount will be used to improve conditions of food, shelter and education, as well as to re-launch the private sector and encourage small activities to generate income for displaced populations, said Luísa Meque, INGD director, during a meeting with government officials and partners in Pemba, the provincial capital of Cabo Delgado.
According to Meque, so far the authorities have secured around 600 million meticals [8 million euros] for the implementation of the plan.
The city of Pemba, the capital of Cabo Delgado, has been the main destination for populations fleeing armed attacks that began in 2017 in more northern districts of the province, currently housing almost double its capacity.
Armed violence in Cabo Delgado began more than three years ago but gained a new escalation a fortnight ago when armed groups first attacked the town of Palma, which is about six kilometres from the multi-million dollar natural gas projects.
The attacks caused dozens of deaths and forced thousands of Palma residents to flee, worsening a humanitarian crisis that has affected some 700,000 people in the province since the conflict began, according to United Nations figures.
