Mozambique: State funeral for Marcelino dos Santos begins in Maputo

The state funeral of Marcelino dos Santos, who died on February 11, got underway in Maputo on Tuesday morning.
Today is the sixth of the seven days of national mourning decreed by the government for this national hero, recognised for his “exceptional acts of bravery and heroism in the defence of the country and of human life”.
Mozambican and foreign notables are expected at the ceremony, which terminates tomorrow with the deposition of the remains of Marcelino dos Santos at the monument of Mozambican Heroes, in Maputo.
Today’s ceremony began with a funeral procession from Maputo Central Hospital to the Noble Hall of the Municipal Council of the City of Maputo, accompanied by a solemn escort of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique.
