State-airport manager Aeroportos de Moçambique (Mozambique Airports – ADM) announced yesterday that it had recorded losses of approximately US$24 million as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, but said it is still working towards international health certification in anticipation of receiving more flights soon.
Covid-19 continues to impact different sectors, devastating the accounts at several companies. ADM says that, up to this September, it had recorded losses of about US$24 million as a direct result of the pandemic.
However, and despite the accumulated losses, the prospect of resuming flights in number is growing, and to this end, preparing airports with adequate sanitary conditions is vital.
“We have sought to implement all measures announced by the civil aviation regulatory authority, to ensure that we are certified as a safe airport in terms of Covid-19. The process has already started and we hope that within one month, or a month-and-a-half, we will have the certification,” the chairman of ADM revealed.
Prospective countries for reciprocal international flights with Mozambique include Ethiopia, South Africa, Portugal, Qatar and Turkey.
“These are some of the countries selected for this phase. A number of flight frequency scenarios are being considered. Throughout the process, these are increasing, which could make it possible for airlines to have more flights per week than the current two,” Emanuel Chaves said.
