The onshore Búzi block in Sofala province, may begin producing natural gas as early as 2026. With the client already secured, it will also be used to power a thermoelectric plant in Sofala.
To this end, assessment activities are underway to facilitate the submission of the development plan to the government by the end of this year.
The information was shared with Notícias by Rudêncio Morais, research and production administrator at the National Hydrocarbons Company ENH, EP on the sidelines of the II Indonesia-Africa Forum in Bali.
Moraes noted that, in parallel, the Indonesian company is acquiring 2D seismic data , with the participation of ENH technicians. This will take place first in the Buzi area (the northern part of the block) and then in Divinhe (south).
“The work plan currently being implemented indicates that seismic acquisition operations in the north of the Buzi block will be completed in November 2024, with operations in the south expected to begin in December 2024,” he said.

Moraes stressed that the start of seismic acquisition is a significant step, as it will contribute to understanding the geological potential of Buzi and Divinhe.
“The most recent seismic data was acquired in 2012/2013, and it is essential to obtain new data to improve understanding of the subsurface, with more detailed images that will help identify and consolidate the identified prospects,” Moraes said. The submission of the Buzi development plan is scheduled for the last quarter of 2024, with the first natural gas production expected to start at the end of 2026.
With 75% of the shares, Buzi Hydrocarbons Pte. Ltd. (BHPL) is the operator of the block. ENH has 25%, representing the Mozambican state, as in other natural gas projects.
During the Indonesia-Africa Forum, the Indonesian private sector signalled its willingness to cooperate with Mozambican companies in a safe energy transition for Mozambique and in adding value to local mineral resources.
