Beaches in Inhambane province, such as Tofo, Barra, Guinjata, Ligogo and Baía dos Cocos, have this season seen the return of significant numbers of foreign tourists drawn to the potential for recreational fishing there.
The activity was suspended in 2020 by the Covid-19 pandemic, but last year alone, the Provincial Service for Economic Activities (SPAE) issued close to 3,000 game fishing licenses, against the 2,500 forecast.
In view of the increase in tourists engaged in sport fishing, authorities have intensified inspection of compliance with legislation, which authorizes the activity only for those holding a valid license.
According to the director of the Provincial Service for Economic Activities in Inhambane, Elvira Xirinda, the government is generally satisfied with the level of foreign visitors’ compliance.
