Mozambique spends “more than six thousand million meticais annually on road maintenance”, Radio Mozambique reports today, an amount corresponding to around US$98.5 million at current exchange rates.
Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Road Fund Angelo Macuacua says that the sector is intensifying its search for alternative funding to finance the construction and maintenance of the road infrastructure.
Speaking on Thursday in Maputo at the opening of the third meeting of the Executive Committee of the African Road Maintenance Funds Association (ARMF), Macuacua said that “factors adverse to the economy of the country are constraints in keeping the national roads passable”, Radio Mozambique reports.
The ARMF event brings together representatives from Mozambique, Namibia, Côte d’Ivoire, Equatorial Guinea, Lesotho, Ethiopia, Madagascar, Kenya, Zambia, Central African Republic, Cameroon and Burundi.
