Three fires in just over a week reduced to rubble three construction material warehouses in the city of Beira, raising concern among the authorities.
“It’s worrying, but it’s a new phenomenon that’s happening in our city,” said the commander of the National Public Safety Service (firefighters) in Beira, Lorito Joaquim, after fighting the most recent fire in the city on Thursday.
“During the operation, we found that the fire was caused by a short circuit,” he said.
He added that, in just over a week, the city had recorded three fires in different warehouses, all of them storing construction materials, with the owners incurring huge losses.
“It is important to observe all safety measures in order to contribute to fire prevention,” Joaquim said.
Two large fires in less than 24 hours struck commercial establishments in the Sofala provincial capital.
Ferragem Maquinino, in Chaimite neighbourhood, and Ferragm Khosin, in Chingussura, saw their warehouses reduced to ashes within a few hours of each other.
The owner of Ferragem Maquinino, Mahomed Adil, has already estimated the loss at around 250 million meticais (€3.6 million) and complained about the performance of the firefighters, who he said arrived an hour after the alert.
“What we saw was limited water and hoses, and experience of fire-fighting was also limited. I’ve lost everything I had – I’m ruined and in debt. I have 50 workers who could lose their jobs. I was ruined overnight,” he said.
A week ago, in the Maquinino neighbourhood in the centre of Beira, Armazém Chiveve, another building materials store, was also reduced to rubble in a violent fire, which broke out at midday. Once again, a short circuit is suspected as the cause.
