– The South Korean government, through its International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), has pledged to disburse 14.8 million US dollars to fund the construction of a primary school in the southern Mozambican province of Maputo.
To implement the project, the permanent secretary at the Education Ministry, Ndiça Massinga, and KOICA director, Jinjou Hun, signed a memorandum of understanding on Thursday.
According to Massinga, the agreement sets up the conditions for implementing the project, which includes the building of a primary school in Ngolhoza neighbourhood, as well as construction of classrooms at Eduardo Mondlane Secondary School and Joaquim Chissano Primary School, all in Maputo province.
“With these schools, more children will be able to study in professional classrooms and more students will be enrolled, enabling basic education for all, meeting the sector’s ongoing demand, especially in Maputo province”, she said.
Massinga appreciated KOICA support, saying that “it is helping the country strengthen its national interest and the objective of sustainable development, focused on inclusion, equitable education and the promotion of learning opportunities.”
“This entire process is aligned with the fundamental principle that in Mozambique, education is, above all, a human right and an essential instrument for the country’s development”, Massinga said.
“We extend our special greetings and thanks to the director of KOICA for their willingness to provide support and for their efforts to ensure that the negotiations surrounding the project were crowned with success, despite the inherent difficulties”, she added.
For his part, Artur Graciano, Director-General of the National Public Works Administration, announced that school construction could begin in 2027, “considering that next year we will be designing the project and selecting the contractor.”
