The South Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) has disbursed one million US dollars to support the victims of Islamist terrorism in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado.
The amount, which will also support the victims of natural disasters in Cabo Delgado, was channelled to the coffers of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), under its projects aimed at “supporting the peace process and humanitarian development in Cabo Delgado.”
According to Bok Kang, the Korean Ambassador in Mozambique, speaking to reporters on Friday in Maputo, the aid will provide urgent relief to the internally displaced people in Cabo Delgado.
“In addition to meeting immediate humanitarian needs, this support will also contribute to long-term solutions through regional development efforts, where part of this funding will strengthen the IOM’s Displacement Tracking Matrix, which helps to monitor displaced populations and improve response efforts”, he said.
The diplomat believes that the collaboration between South Korea and IOM strengthens the collective capacity to meet the immediate and long-term needs of displaced communities in Mozambique.
“We trust that the IOM will continue to be dedicated to its work, delivering significant results that will make a real difference to the lives of the people affected. Korea continues its commitment to supporting Mozambique, not only in humanitarian assistance, but also in the development of various projects, especially the construction of the Quelimane Central Hospital, the supply of essential medical equipment and training for health professionals”, he said.
For his part, the manager of the Shelter Programme in Cabo Delgado, Dinis Dinis, explained that, in addition to Korea, the project relies on a variety of other donors, involved in rebuilding infrastructure and human dignity, which means that a large investment is needed in order to reach the largest number of displaced people.
“So far, needs have been identified in the districts of Mocímboa da Praia and Metuge”, he added.
