Francis Hanekom died last week on the morning of Wednesday 5th of August, in Palma, northern Mozambique. She was the widow of Andre Hanekom, the South African businessman who died on January 23, 2019, while arrested on charges of financing terrorist attacks in Cabo Delgado.
Francis Hanekom continued to struggle to clear her husband of the accusations levelled against him and, after his death, demanded a new autopsy in addition to that performed by the Mozambican authorities.
According to Canal de Moçambqiue, Francis Hanekom died in bed, alone and seriously ill.
Andrie Hanekom, one of her daughters, told Canal de Moçambique last month that she was concerned about her mother’s health, and that she did not know how much longer she [her mother] could last.
“[…] She needs medication. She does not have access to a vehicle. They are waiting for her to die. We do not know how long she can resist,” Andrie Hanekom told Canal de Moçambique in July.
The family in South Africa had medicines worth thousands of rand, she added, which had been prescribed by doctors and needed to be delivered to her mother, but authorization to travel to Mozambique was lacking. “My sister needs to take the medication to make sure she gets the right medication and food to recover. But we can’t get permission.”
When Andre Hanekom died, the Mozambican authorities performed an autopsy that concluded that he had lost his life naturally, but his wife had a new autopsy done in South Africa, to where this body had been transferred.
Francis Hanekom’s family says they are unable to dissociate the current circumstances from the stress of her husband’s detention and death.
