The Ressano Garcia border crossing to South Africa in Maputo province on Wednesday (June 16) started operating from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., in line with new restrictions adopted in South Africa to contain the third wave of Covid-19 infections.
The adjustment in the border crossing hours follows the announcement of Level 3 restrictions in South Africa from Tuesday night on, with a 10:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. curfew.
The crossing point at Ressano Garcia will therefore open from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. for travellers leaving Mozambique, with entrance channels open until the last passengers arriving from South Africa are processed.
National Migration Service (SENAMI) spokesman Celestino Matsinhe said on Thursday that the restrictions would cover only the tourist category, the rest – cargo and merchandise transport – adhering to the normal (6:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.) operating hours.
“For the transport of goods there is no change; for the movement of truck drivers the schedule that was in effect previously remains,” Matsinhe clarified.
In another development, Matsinhe reported that, from the 5th to the 11th of June, SENAMI refused four foreigners, aged between 25 and 38 years, entry into the country, on the grounds of their presenting false immigration documents.
The four included three Iraqis travelling from Dar-Es-Salaam, Tanzania, who were refused entry through Pemba Airport for using false passports, and a Somali citizen arriving from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, who presented a false visa at Mavalane International airport, Maputo city.
In the same week, SENAMI received 71 passport applications from Mozambicans residing abroad, through Mozambican embassies and consulates.
Matsinhe pointed out that Mozambican passports can be obtained from diplomatic and consular missions in Johannesburg (South Africa), Blantyre (Malawi, Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), Harare (Zimbabwe), Nairobi (Kenya), Lisbon (Portugal), Berlin (Germany ), Beijing (China), New Delhi (India), Brasília (Brazil) and Washington (USA).
