Sofala is to get a canned fruit processing plant, the first of its kind in the province, with an investment of approximately 895 million meticais (around US$14 million).
The plant will be located in Nhamatanda district and could generate as many as 3,000 jobs, according to district administrator Emanuel Teixeira.
“It’s a project that Gorongosa National Park will implement in the park’s buffer zone to can fruit such as pineapple and other types. It’s really designed to support families’ livelihoods on a large scale. The project will begin soon and is estimated at approximately US$14 million, and the funds are already available,” he said.
The environmental impact study and the survey to determine the number of families requiring resettling will begin within days.
