The National Institute of Social Security (INSS) in Cabo Delgado announced today the forgiveness of fines totalling 104 million meticais (1.6 million euros) to companies affected by terrorism in this northern province of Mozambique.
In total, the measure will cover 2,400 companies and aims to “mitigate the impacts” of the action of the rebels that have terrorized several districts of the province since 2017, declared the INSS delegate in Cabo Delgado, Chomar Selemane, speaking at a press conference held for the presentation. of the decree approving the forgiveness of fines.
For the CEP – Business Council of Cabo Delgado, the measure will “boost” the development of the province, at a time the authorities have been advising the business community to return to the now “safe” areas of the affected districts.
“The measure will boost the development of Cabo Delgado, because many companies have been stopped since 2017 and will also motivate entrepreneurs”, said Mussa Alfredo, representative of the CEP.
Cabo Delgado province is rich in natural gas, but has been terrorized since 2017 by armed rebels, with some attacks claimed by the Islamic State extremist group.
There are 784,000 internally displaced persons due to the conflict, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and about 4,000 deaths, according to the ACLED conflict registry project.
