Six thousand people living in five communities in Chibuto district, Gaza province, are being held hostage by the rising waters of the Limpopo river, now swollen by rains falling upstream.
Currently, the Mohambe hydrological substation indicates that the Limpopo has reached six metres in height, considered its alert level.
Chibuto district administrator Sérgio Moiane highlighted that, in addition to villages cut off, access roads were also impassable and around 2,000 hectares of crops flooded.
Moiane said that there had so far been no human casualties, as communities had been warned to avoid going to the river for bathing and farming, among other activities.
He also detailed that the district government was providing water purifiers to prevent water-borne diseases spreading.
According to the hydrological forecast of the National Institute of Meteorology, a moderate to low risk of flooding is expected for a large part of the Limpopo basin this quarter.
