The latest attack on a bus in central Mozambique injured six people on Monday on National Road 1, the main link between the south and north of the country, local sources told Lusa.
The attack occurred around 7:30 a.m. (6:30 a.m. in Lisbon) and people were hit by shards of glass when the bus was hit by “gunshots,” shortly after Mutindiri, on the border between Manica and Sofala provinces, one of the passengers told Lusa.
The bus passengers had spent the night in the Muxungue area for fear of ambushes that have been common on this stretch since August last year.
Between Mutindiri and Muda Serração a military position was set up that prevents vehicles from circulating on the section of the attacks after 18:00.
The victims of this new attack were taken to Muxungue Rural Hospital, the nearest unit.
Lusa contacted the Mozambican police spokesman in Solafa, Daniel Macucua, who promised a statement in the next few hours.
This incursion follows others registered in Manica and Sofala, that caused the death of 23 people since August in roads and villages of those two provinces in central Mozambique.
In the region, dissident guerrillas from the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), led by Mariano Nhongo, accused by the authorities of being responsible for the attacks.
The group has threatened to use armed violence to negotiate better conditions for social reintegration than those agreed by their party with the government.
The area of attack has been the scene of other raids on that stretch that links the North to Inchope, an important junction with National Road 6 (between Beira and Zimbabwe).
