The local government in Monapo district, Nampula province, has acknowledged that the mass production and processing of sisal for export is contributing positively as a source of income and employability for young people in the district.
The information was shared by the director of the Monapo District Services of Economic Activities, Braimo Armando, who stated that, in addition to creating job opportunities in agricultural companies, sisal farming is driving improvements in quality of life, especially in ensuring food and nutritional security.
“Despite the bad weather experienced [Tropical Cyclone Dikeledi], we are making great strides in terms of sisal production and we have three processing establishments in the Monapo district and an area of 14,000 hectares established for sisal cultivation,” Armando said.
Armando revealed that sisal production in Monapo district employs a greater number of seasonal workers and around 400 permanent ones, including young people, strengthening the national economy and the population’s quality of life.
“The district government has been promoting mass production campaigns, especially with sisal processing companies, […] taking care to set attractive prices during the marketing campaign and sow the seed for the coming years,” he said.
Armando explained that sisal from the district is exported to European, Asian and some African countries, and took the opportunity to urge the population to increase production levels.
