Mozambique is to simplify business licensing procedures and regulations in the hope of improving the country’s standing in the World Bank’s Doing Business index, where it recently slid to 137th place in a list of 190 economies, down three places from last year.
The annual report assesses regulations throughout the life cycle of small and medium-sized enterprises, as well as business activities a whole.
According to Government spokesman Mouzinho Saíde, “eleven indicators were considered [in the analysis]: the opening of companies, obtaining a building license, obtaining electricity, registering property, obtaining credit, protecting minority investors, paying taxes, cross-border trade, contract enforcement, insolvency settlement and labour market regulation”.
Mozambique is ranked 15th in sub-Saharan Africa and fourth in the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries.
Saíde said that a number of actions to improve the business environment in the country were under way.
“What we are going to do is further simplify the process of granting licenses for the exercise of economic activities and review the Commercial and Real Estate Registration Code in order to facilitate business in our country. This is our priority. Once this is done, conditions will be created to improve our position in the Doing Business ranking,” Saíde explained.
