The Government of Mozambique, through the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy, has signed two memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with the Republic of Zambia and with the Republic of Zimbabwe, reinforcing the common commitment to promote energy integration, industrialization and sustainable development in the Southern African region.
The agreements were signed at an official ceremony, within the scope of the 11th Mining and Energy Conference (MMEC) taking place in Maputo, and are in line with the goals and principles of the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
The MoU signed with the Republic of Zambia establishes the basis for the development of a gas pipeline between the city of Beira, in Mozambique, and Ndola, in Zambia. This infrastructure will allow the transportation of up to 3.5 million metric tons of petroleum products per year, ensuring for the Zambian market a more stable, efficient and economical supply of fuels. Domestically, the project will contribute to increasing traffic and the use of the fuel terminal at the Port of Beira, boosting the local economy by creating direct and indirect jobs.
The MoU signed with the Republic of Zimbabwe aims to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the supply, generation and transmission of electricity. This agreement also includes mechanisms to facilitate fuel trade and the development of energy infrastructure, creating the necessary conditions to support Zimbabwe’s industrial growth and promote regional energy integration.
“These agreements go beyond simple technical partnerships; they represent a joint vision of interdependence and shared progress. Mozambique thus strengthens its geostrategic position as a SADC energy corridor, contributing to regional energy security and to the balance of our trade balance through energy exports,” said the Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy of Mozambique.
The MoUs signed today demonstrate the commitment of the three countries to work in a coordinated manner to ensure a more stable, sustainable and prosperous energy future for the region.
