Mozambique: Signing of MoU between Gorongosa Restoration Project and UN-Habitat

The Gorongosa Restoration Project (GRP) and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN- Habitat) signed, in Maputo, a Memorandum of Understanding with the objective of providing a framework of cooperation within which UN-Habitat and GRP shall cooperate to provide technical support to local government and communities living around the Gorongosa National Park to be more resilient and to promote sustainable urban development and a balanced territorial growth so the conservation of the Park biodiversity is ensured. This collaboration between the Parties will be implemented with a focus on providing technical assistance to the participatory process to elaborate Spatial Plans for the buffer zone of Gorongosa Park, design a Master Plan for Vila Gorongosa, elaborate participatory community resilience action planning at town, settlement and community level and construct resilient infrastructure and public services.
This 5 year agreement will allow both Parties to collaborate with local government and community members in the elaboration of participatory plans and to provide the necessary technical expertise to ensure that the necessary policies, procedures, design practices, quality assurance and project management principles are implemented for the construction of resilient infrastructure and public services.

About UN-Habitat
UN-Habitat, the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, is mandated by the UN General Assembly (since 1975) to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities. UN-Habitat is responsible for promoting and consolidating collaboration with all partners, including local authorities, private and non-governmental organisations in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in particular, Goal 11 of “Making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable”, Its mandate is also framed in the New Urban Agenda, among other international frameworks, an action-oriented document signed by member states which sets global standards for achieving SDG11. UN-Habitat has been active in Mozambique since 2002 and its main focus of work in the country has been: Urbanisation and territorial transformation, Urban resilience and disaster risk reduction and Guaranteed land tenure and affordable housing.
About the Gorongosa Project
Gorongosa National Park (GNP) in Mozambique is perhaps Africa’s greatest wildlife restoration story. In 2008, a 20-year Public-Private Partnership was established for the joint management of GNP between the Government of Mozambique and the Carr Foundation (Gorongosa Restoration Project), a US nonprofit organisation. In 2018, the Government of Mozambique signed an extension of the joint management agreement for another 25 years. By adopting a 21st Century conservation model of balancing the needs of wildlife and people, Gorongosa is protecting and saving this beautiful wilderness, returning it to its rightful place as one of Africa’s greatest national parks.
GNP has been described as one of the most diverse parks on Earth, covering a vast expanse of 400,000 hectares. In recent years, the Gorongosa Project, with the support of Mozambique’s National Administration of Conservation Areas (ANAC), has ensured the protection of a recovering population of lions in this system, successfully reduced key threats, and has been recognised as one of National Geographic’s “Last Wild Places” and by TIME Magazine as one of the “World’s Greatest Places – 2019”.
