A sheikh called Bacar Saíde was kidnapped from his rented residence in Pemba’s famous Paquitequete neighbourhood last Friday. A family source told ‘Carta de Moçambqiue’ that the incident occurred at around 6:00 p.m. and was perpetrated by a group of three heavily armed men.
Sheik Bacar Saíde is a native of Naunde, in Mucojo administrative post, Macomia district, and has lived in the city of Pemba since 2019, when he left his own region after becoming associated with the insurgency in that part of the country.
Sources close to the sheikh say that he denounced some Mucojo residents as members of the terrorist group, but in 2018 was detained by the Defence and Security Forces (FDS), and only released a month later after the intervention of the Islamic Council of Mozambique.
In Pemba, the sources say, Sheik Bacar Saíde first lived at his sister’s house, but later rented a property in the famous Paquitequete neighbourhood. When President Nyusi visited Pemba in February of this year, Sheik Bacar Saíde was invited to say prayers on behalf of the Muslim community in Cabo Delgado.
