Mozambique: Maputo National Park reinforcing 145 km of fence to prevent elephants from escaping
Less than a month after the previous victim died, a shark has killed another fisherman in Inhambane province. The twenty-seven-year-old victim was attacked in Macuamene in Maxixe municipality as he was fishing with his father.
José Alfredo, the victim’s father, who witnessed the attack, said the shark tore off one of his son’s legs and he died instantly.
“We were fishing when I heard a scream. As I got closer, my son fell into the water. He had lost a leg and the fingers of his right hand. I pulled him by the arm but he was already dead,” he said, in shock.
The victim leaves a widow and a three-months-old baby.
Fishermen interviewed by Rádio Moçambique at the deceased’s house say that fishing is risky because of shark attacks but say that they will not abandon the activity because it is their livelihood. For the fishermen, the solution is to hunt down and kill the shark, an opinion not shared by the head of the Maritime Administration, António Nhanala.
Nhanala calls for the strengthening of preventive measures, adding that killing the shark is out of the question because it is a protected species.
“Anyone who goes to sea should avoid going into water that comes above the knee,” Nhanala said.
This is the third lethal shark attack in Inhambane Bay in less than three months.
