The Ministry of Health (MISAU) reassured Mozambicans this Monday regarding mpox. According to the Ministry’s press release, sample results from all suspected cases in the country are negative. Below is the full press release:
“On August 14, 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared mpox a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.
In response to the WHO’s statements, the Ministry of Health raised the alert level for mpox surveillance throughout the country. The aim of raising the alert level is to increase the sensitivity of the health surveillance system and thus improve the identification of suspected cases of the disease. The symptoms of mpox are similar to those of other exanthematous diseases. As a result of this high alert, the health surveillance system has been actively identifying individuals suspected of having this disease, who are immediately tested to confirm or rule out the infection.
Therefore, from 14 to 26 August 2024, the surveillance system detected a total of 7 suspected cases of mpox: 4 in Cabo Delgado, 1 in Niassa, 1 in Zambézia and 1 in Maputo Province. The samples from all suspected cases were tested at the Reference Laboratory of the National Institute of Health and the results were negative for mpox.
This data does not confirm the information circulating on social media about the existence of possible cases of mpox in our country.
The MISAU will update society on the disease in Mozambique and calls on the general population to adopt disease prevention measures, avoid panic and follow the information released by the health authorities, through official channels.”
