At least seven members of the so-called ‘Namparamas’ group, who went on the rampage in Angoche district, Nampula province, demanding a reduction in the cost of living, were killed during a confrontation with agents of the Rapid Intervention Unit (UIR), at the headquarters of the Aúbe administrative post.
Sources in Angoche confirmed to ‘Carta de Moçambique’, without much detail, that the confrontation occurred around noon this Thursday (06-02), at the entrance to the town.
One UIR agent was injured in the arm, but is out of danger. After the confrontation, sources report, the UIR withdrew to Angoche district headquarters, from where it had received orders to prevent any further action by the Namparamas.
Before seizing the administrative post of Aube, the Namparamas group, whose origin is unknown (although they speak the Emakwa language), had reportedly gone to the district of Larde with the same purpose of demanding the stabilisation of the cost of living.
