Seven people were killed and 22 injured in an accident on National Road Number One (EN1) at the Xinavane intersection, Manhiça district, Maputo province on Sunday afternoon (17-07).
The accident involved a passenger van and a private vehicle which collided head-on as a result of dangerous overtaking on the part of the passenger vehicle, Radio Mozambique quotes Maputo Province Traffic Police spokesman Rodrigues Chabana as saying yesterday.
The 22 injured, including a two-year-old child, were taken to the Manhiça District Hospital.
Of those injured, 12 were in a serious condition and another 10 were slightly injured, Chabana explained, adding that there were strong indications that the driver of one the vehicles was drunk.
More than a year ago, 32 people died when two trucks and a bus were involved in an irregular overtaking in the same Manhiça district where yesterday’s accident occurred, and in November 2021, another 17 people died in an accident between public transport vehicles there.
On 22 January this year, 28 people died on the EN1 in Zambézia province, central Mozambique, in an accident that involved a goods vehicle and a public transport minibus.
Road accident rates in Mozambique are characterised as unacceptably high by many public safety organisations, while Mozambican authorities identify speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol as the main causes of accidents.
According to figures provided to Lusa by the Mozambican Association for Victims of Road Insecurity (AMVIRO), at least a thousand people die on Mozambique’s roads every year.
