Seven gambling machines, popularly known as “xindondi”, were recently seized and destroyed by the National Inspection of Economic Activities (INAE) in the city of Maputo.
According to INAE spokesman Tomás Timba, the equipment was being operated illegally, hence its removal from ‘barracas’ or homes.
“We have to make economic agents aware that they cannot install a gambling machine on the veranda of a house or in stalls and markets. There are proper places for the deployment of such equipment,” Timba said, pointing out that those involved must have a license granted by the Secretary of State for Sport to operate such a machine.
Tomás Timba further deplored the participation of children in games of chance.
“We must be concerned with this situation, as some children may become delinquents, embezzling family money or skipping school in order to gamble,” he said. It is society’s responsibility, he added, to denounce the existence of such opportunities in inappropriate places.
