Seven people died and another 12 suffered injuries ranging from serious to minor in a road accident on the Maputo Ring Road near the Matola-Gare toll gate in Maputo province yesterday.
The victims were travelling in a Toyota Hiace, registration AKE 769 MC, which was leaving Zimpeto for Matola-Gare.
According to Maputo Ring Road concessionaire Rede Viária de Moçambique (REVIMO), when arriving at the area known as the GEMOC stop, the vehicle crashed into the central divider and a power pole, causing the death of five passengers at the scene.
This Monday (08-07), two more deaths were reported.
“Six patients were admitted to the emergency rooms of the Maputo Central Hospital [HCM], around 12:00, of whom four were male and two were female. All of them were diagnosed with poly-trauma, and two unfortunately died,” said Jeremias Amussesse, a doctor at HCM, quoted by Televisão de Moçambique.
Rafael Baloi, a REVIMO technician, told Notícias’ that around 20 members of a religious congregation were travelling in the vehicle, heading to a Sunday service in Matola municipality.
According to Baloi, the 12 injured were taken to Maputo Central (HCM) and Matola Provincial (HPM) hospitals for medical assistance.
The source also reported material damage to road infrastructure and the vehicle.
It is believed that excessive speed was the cause of the accident.
Mozambique has recorded more than 4,800 deaths in road accidents in the last five years, according to data released on May 22 by the government, calling for society’s involvement to stop the scourge.
