Mozambique: Protestors demand lower prices - AIM
The National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) in Gaza has recovered 364,000 of the approximately 1,487,500 meticais stolen during an assault on the driver of an economic establishment in the city of Xai-Xai last week.
SERNIC provincial spokesman, Zaqueu Mucambe, said on Tuesday that the amount was recovered in an operation that ended with the arrest of two of the four members of the group.
“The arrest of these citizens, both 29 years old, is the result of steps taken by the institution with a view to clarifying the case of aggravated theft against a citizen taking a large amount of money to deposit in a bank. We recovered the amount in the possession of the two miscreants and their wives,” he said.
Among the detainees is a private security company agent described as one of the leaders of the gang.
SERNIC suspects that the now detained security guard, who worked at various bank branches in the city, had monitored the victims’ movements.
The detainees are part of a gang of four who last week robbed a driver of a vehicle belonging to an economic establishment, who was transporting more than 1,400,000 meticais to a Xai-Xai bank.
Spokesman Mucambe said that attempts to locate the remaining amount and the other two individuals involved, still currently at large, were ongoing.
The Sernis spokesman urged entrepreneurs and other institutions to work with the PRM or with security companies when transporting large sums of money to and from banks.
The detainees, one of them the owner of the vehicle, deny direct involvement in the crime, but admit to having facilitated the rental of the Toyota Ractis car used in the robbery.
