Mozambique: SERNIC on the trail of individuals involved in kidnap attempt – AIM

Mozambique’s National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) has admitted that it has not been able to identify the individuals who attempted to kidnap a businessman of Indian nationality on Monday, in central Maputo.

SERNIC spokesperson Hilário Lole told reporters on Thursday that the attempted kidnapping took place at the businessman’s commercial establishment, and it was the second time that he had been targeted.

“We’re working with other organisations to be able to shed light on this case, we have information and that’s what we’re working on”, Lole said, adding that SERNIC is doing everything to shed light on the case of this double kidnap attempt, but the whereabouts of the kidnappers are still unknown.

The kidnap was foiled because passers-by and a police officer responded to the businessman’s cries for help, and the would-be kidnappers fled in their getaway vehicle, abandoning their victim.

Caustic soda

On the occasion, SERNIC also presented two Pakistani citizens accused of being involved in drug trafficking. The detainees deny the charges.

“The individuals were arrested on 8 September in possession of a product, totalling 250 grams, which was submitted to the laboratory and found to be caustic soda, which can be used to produce various types of drugs, including cocaine and heroin,” Lole said.
