Mozambique’s National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) on Wednesday incinerated an unspecified quantity of drugs including heroin, cocaine and cannabis, much of which had been seized recently at the Port of Beira, on a cargo ship heading to Kenya.
Some of the drugs had been confiscated by the police from five individuals who are now under custody for further investigation, according to a report in Thursday’s issue of the Maputo daily “Noticias”.
Alfeu Sitoe, head of SERNIC Public Relations, said the drugs destroyed at the Beira Central Hospital (HCB) waste incinerator, were apprehended last August as result of “intense police work” against drug use and trafficking.
“The incineration is intended to avoid the accumulation of drugs in our possession. We always say the apprehended drugs have been incinerated. Today, we confirm, once more, the destruction of such substances which are strictly prohibited under the law in force in the country,” said Sitoe.
He also made an appeal to anyone who might have information about people involved in the sale of illicit drugs to contact the police immediately.
The director of the Sofala branch of the government’s anti-drug office, Antonio Semente, said drugs circulating in the province are not only sent to different parts of the country but also to the world.
“Unfortunately, some peasants cultivate drugs in their fields, rather than basic crops for their own subsistence,” Semente added.
The director encouraged farmers to find other crops with which to make money, such as millet, maize and sorghum, to avoid harming the future of young Mozambicans.
