The National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) has in the last few days incinerated around 76 kg of cannabis sativa, commonly known as ‘soruma’, in the town of Missevene, Bela Vista administrative post, Matutuíne district, in Maputo province.
According to SERNIC spokesperson Henrique Mendes, the drugs were seized in operations carried out by the corporation and other police forces last year as part of the fight against the consumption and trafficking of illicit drugs in that part of the country.
“This type of drug saw greater circulation last year, as it is low-cost and easy to acquire at points of sale and production. The situation led the corporation to intensify investigative work in the neighbourhoods and arrest people involved in these criminal acts,” he added.
Mendes urged communities to continue reporting and providing tip-offs on possible “sbocas de fumo” (drug dens) and plantations of psycho-active substances of any size, as a way of facilitating the work of police authorities.
