According to Sernic, the detainee is on a list of names associated with kidnappings in the capital, and was involved in an attempt to kidnap the same victim in July of last year.
“He was arrested en route to Marracuene in possession of eight mobile phones with eleven SIM cards, one of which was related to the kidnapping last year of a woman in the city of Maputo,” Sernic spokesperson Hilário Lole said.
Lole explained that there was evidence that pointed to the man’s participation in several kidnappings as, in addition to the cell phones, he was found in possession of eleven passports, all belonging to third parties, three to individuals outside the country.
“He has connections with many individuals who are on the list of potential kidnappers, one of them his brother, who Sernic is attempting to arrest,” Lole noted.
After the arrest of the individual’s alleged accomplices on July 1, the suspect was in Gaza province and was planning a trip to the Republic of South Africa, Lole added.
There are currently three kidnapping victims still in captivity.
