The Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo) party has publicly denounced the occupation of its national headquarters and the office of its president by agents of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) and the Rapid Intervention Unit (UIR), demanding their immediate withdrawal and suggesting that they instead occupy Frelimo or government premises.
During the National Conference of Combatants of the Struggle for Democracy (ACOLDE), held this Wednesday in Maputo, André Madjibire, a senior member of Renamo, vehemently criticised the police presence at the party’s premises, classifying the action as an “assault” and an “occupation without clear basis”.
“If the police have no place to stay, I believe that in this country, with so many officers, they will also occupy Frelimo headquarters or the Ponta Vermelha,” said a visibly upset Madjibire.
Madjibire stressed that Renamo was not an enemy of Frelimo or the police forces, but rather a political adversary with different visions for national development.
“Renamo is not an enemy of Frelimo, nor of the UIR, nor of any entity. What we are, are political adversaries, with different ways of thinking about the future of Mozambique.”
Renamo considers that the current situation seriously compromises its political and organizational functioning, and is demanding the immediate reopening of its national headquarters and provincial delegations.
“The headquarters must be reopened. Those are the headquarters of the Renamo party. Our members and staff need a place to work, and that place is the national headquarters and the political-provincial delegations,” he reiterated.
