The National Migration Service (SENAMI) claims to have no knowledge of alleged fake Covid-19 tests being used to cross borders, saying the responsibility lies with the health sector.
Spokesman Celestino Matsinhe told reporters on Thursday that SENAMI “deals only with migration issues”, not health and sanitation.
“There are health teams (at border posts) for Covid-19 or any other disease issues. SENAMI only takes care of the migratory movement,” he declared.
Seven days have now passed since the reopening of borders with South Africa. In Ressano Garcia, SENAMI has already registered more than 5,000 travellers crossing.
According to Matsinhe, of 5,185 travellers, 2,376 entered and 2,809 left, against 3,052 the previous week. Of the total, 1,246 were national citizens and 1,130 foreigners.
Four foreign citizens were refused entry. “Two are of South African nationality, one Zimbabwean, and one of Ugandan nationality,” Matsinhe said, adding that the reason was failure to present a work visa.
Also on Thursday, SENAMI announced that it was exempting from fees applicants for documents who made appointments for attendance before 30 September, reiterating that everyone who made use of advance booking through the online service launched last month would be refunded.
