More than 400 foreigners were refused entry to Mozambique during the past week, under restrictions imposed to prevent the spread of the novel Covid-19 coronavirus.
The 419 citizens were South African, Zimbabwean and British nationals.
This figure represents an increase of more than 100 percent compared to the same period last year, when 21 citizens were refused entry to the country.
National Migration Service spokesman Celestino Matsinhe said in Maputo yesterday that a general lack of clarity in the reasons for their visits was another major reason for refusal.
The SENAMI spokesman also remarked on a general reduction in cross-border movement in the week 21 to 27 March, with the Ressano Garcia (Maputo province), Machipanda (Manica), and Cuchamano (Tete) border crossings recording the highest fall-offs.
