The Mozambican Migration Service will carry out a census to assess the legal status of foreigners in the country, the entity’s director-general said this Tuesday.
“We are planning a census of foreigners from scratch, in order to know where they are located, what was the first visa they used to enter the Republic of Mozambique and what activities they are developing”, explained the Director-General of the Service. of Migration of Mozambique, Fulgencio Seda.
The official was speaking to the media in the city of Beira, in Sofala, moments after a working visit to the delegation of the Migration Service in that province in central Mozambique.
According to Fulgencio Seda, it will be the first time that the country carries out this type of census, whose main objective is to “control the legality” of foreigners in Mozambique.
“We are currently designing the platform of those data that we need to be part of this range of control , which we want to implement for the first time”, added Fulgêncio Seda, without advancing the starting date of the process.
Asked about the situation of Alberto Lário, a Portuguese athletics coach detained two weeks ago for irregularities in his documentation and who was hospitalised shortly afterwards with covid-19, Seda said that the coach would be deported as soon as he tested negative.
“We were just waiting for the last test of covid-19 to be carried out and as soon as that happens he will leave the country”, declared Fulgencio Seda, without giving further details.
The coach, a figure who has been a reference for new generations of athletics in Mozambique, was arrested just over two weeks ago, due to irregularities in his documentation.
According to the Mozambican authorities, Alberto Lário has been in an irregular situation since 2019, the year in which his Foreign Resident Identification Document (DIRE) expired.
The coach was forced to pay a fine of around one million meticais (15,000 euros) and, to regularize his situation, he must return to Portugal.
