Public security is a priority area in Mozambique’s intended cooperation with Algeria. This intention should be formalised, with the signing of agreements within the scope of bilateral talks that the Mozambican head of state, President Filipe Nyusi, will hold this Thursday, with his Algerian counterpart, Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
Speaking to Mozambican journalists in Algiers yesterday, Mozambique’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Manuel Gonçalves, stated that there is a great potential for cooperation in this area, especially taking into account the insurgent attacks in the province of Cabo Delgado.
“Algeria went through difficult times when there was some instability due to terrorist actions, and managed to control it. So there is this partnership potential that we can explore,” he said.
The deputy foreign minister recalled that Mozambique is already fighting terrorism with the support of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and Rwanda, stressing, however, that “we never forget the potential for cooperation with other countries”.
“At each moment and with each country we can identify situations in which we can leverage the challenges we face,” he explained.
Manuel Gonçalves also pointed to agriculture and hydrocarbons as sectors of interest for both countries.
“Algeria has great experience in the area of hydrocarbons, especially in prospecting, exploiting and exporting gas. Mozambique will be able to draw on this experience, as we have important reserves of this resource in the country,” he highlighted.
In addition to the bilateral talks, the Mozambican president is also expected to participate in the 7th Summit of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) in Algiers on Saturday.
It is Mozambique’s first official participation in the grouping, after its accession as an Observer Member in Qatar in 2023.
Manuel Gonçalves also remarked that Mozambique and Algeria have had strong historical and political relations for a long time, highlighting, however, that there is a deficit in bilateral commercial cooperation.
“This visit comes after another made by the late President Samora Machel, more than 40 years ago. So, the visit aims to relaunch relations between the two countries,” he said.
