The village of Nova Mambone, in Govuro district, Inhambane province, and the main village of Machanga, in Sofala, are at risk of flooding in the next 24 to 48 hours, due to the increasing flow in the Save river.
According to the Regional Water Administration of the South (ARA-SUL), in the early hours of Tuesday, the Save river registered water levels more than one metre above the alert level (6.66 against 5.50m), with rain continuing to fall.
The authorities recommend residents to immediately leave areas prone to flooding, avoid crossing rivers where possible and move equipment and goods to safe areas.
Traffic suspended on provisional bridge over Save
The National Roads Administration (ANE) has suspended circulation on the provisional bridge over the Save river, due to safety concerns.
The measure comes in response to the fact that elevated flows of water in the Save are eroding the earth on one of the slopes next to the bridge.
As an alternative, the ANE will open the old bridge, which was closed for rehabilitation.
