The operationalization of the SADC Mission in Mozambique (SAMIM) in the Province of Cabo Delgado has brought calm and stability in areas of Mueda, Macomia and Nangade District leading to the return of residents in these villages.
SAMIM forces have opened the roads from Pemba City leading to Macomia, Awasse, Mueda town and Nangade which subsequently restored public confidence that the risks of attack were very low due to the consistent patrols by SAMIM forces and the Forcas Armadas de Defesa de Mocambique (FADM). The roads were blocked by the insurgents since the armed conflict begun and were used strategically to capture and isolate the towns from outside assistance. The opening up of these roads has led to the return of citizens to their places of residence.
With the return of public confidence, the local authorities in Mueda town have now restored electricity after a yearlong blackout.
The power cut was due to an insurgent attack on the locality of Awasse village which hosts one of the main Electricity of Mozambique substations in the province. The return of electricity in this town has led to the resumption of other socio-economic activities such as restoration of telecommunications and banking services paving way for other sectors of the economy like transportation and movement of goods and services to resume without any fear of attacks.
SAMIM forces in support of the Government of Mozambique continue to create conditions necessary for a return to normal life in the Province of Cabo Delgado as it pursues the insurgents.
SAMIM continues to work closely with other stakeholders to ensure that life returns to normalcy for the people of Cabo Delgado.
SAMIM would like to assure the people of Mozambique and SADC of a collective commitment to achieving a peaceful, stable and secure Cabo Delgado as well as the entire country of Mozambique.
