The 11th Frelimo Congress elects its party president today, and Filipe Nyusi, the current leader and head of state, is the only declared candidate.
The Congress taking place in Matola near Maputo enters its fourth day today, and the election of the leader for the next five years is scheduled to take place by secret ballot this afternoon.
After choosing the president, the delegates will elect the central committee and its secretariat, including the party’s secretary general, possibly on Saturday or Sunday.
The central committee has 230 members and includes members of internal organisations. After being elected, this body will choose the new 15-member political commission, to be led by the Frelimo president.
Selection of central committee, secretariat and political commission personnel follows the principle of renewing 40 percent of their current composition.
The 11th Frelimo Congress will also define the party’s platform for the October 10, 2018 and 2019 general elections.
